Plugs from SMASH! and San Diego Comic Con

16 Aug
plugs-from-smash-and-san-diego-comic-con

I was at San Diego Comic Con, then at SMASH! in the following week I returned. In both cons I had the opportunity to meet many wonderful artists, plus one who I’ve known for a long time and had a roof for me to sleep under while I was in LA. Well there’s one more but she didn’t complete a drawing and was with my other art so that will be coming up soon.

The pages are kind of jumpy and not in any chronological order because I had so little pages left the artists had to make do.

So first up, I was lucky to be able to make it to Tessa‘s signing session. Remember all that Hinabn fanart? Well this is pure art from the artist herself. :D Lamooont <3.

Then there’s Arthur because Grace can’t keep JGL off her mind. She did this in like an hour or less. Totally love this set of pagessss. <3 Thanks Grace!

And because I was hanging around the 4DE booth not knowing when Tessa would be there (Ihadnonettocheck), The Meek caught my eye so I purchased a volume of her comic and got her to draw in my moleskine too. <3

Last but not least is Shaun Healey and Stanley Lau. Shaun was awesome; he looked tired but was all SURE when I asked to take a photo (I wasn’t sure if he’d let me take a photo with him but :D ). He was at SMASH! where I was working kind of next to his booth- though he was hardly there because of the panels and all his fans. Until towards the end of the day. :D

Stanley, I met at SDCC. ’twas awesome. I’m not sure what he thought when I passed a SMASH! 2010 postcard to him there. XD Anyway he said he’d draw if I got something. I ended up picking a Pepper poster because I like his Pepper characterisations. :)

Train Sketches

train-sketches

This page is brought to you with a pen. Not my usual pen, but I forgot to bring my tools with me and this one was a lucky find in my bag. And it’s black too.

I wanted to focus on body language rather than facial expressions, so this became my main goal for the page. I hadn’t drawn Mayhem for a while, and the Anarchy and Catastrophe just followed. Unable to decide Anarchy’s pose, the result was an awkward one, and Catastrophe should have been exclaiming “JENGA!” instead of the quiet, unassuming form.

Young man tree was a random piece. He was supposed to be a fairy. XD Nevertheless I like the strange development.

Random face is random.

And so is randomly walking Catastrophe and Death, looking very business-like.

Train Sketches

Some more train sketches- these aren’t new. I’ve drawn/inked some of these before I fell sick about a week and half ago. Then I did some of it while I was sick, at the same period I was watching a Japanese drama series known as “Rookies” – about a teacher striving to get his high school homeclass students to realise their dreams of playing baseball at national level. I didn’t use any of the references from the show, but did looked up on google for standing baseball poses when I got stuck.

As for the guy with the guy, I decided to play with my new copics- except that the moleskine pages aren’t bleedproof. D: Thankfully the previous page was the last moleskine scan I did.

Girl with headphones was someone on the train in front of me. Random silhouettes, then random city skyline. I don’t know what the top right.. thing/person is supposed to be. >>; I need to learn how to draw spacesuits I guess.

Today’s Art Brought To You By Copics

05 May
todays-art-brought-to-you-by-copics

Having received a 12-set of copics (warm greys) from space kitty Zhi, Arrch, Sarah Coldheart and Ranneko, I’ve decided to get down and dirty with some traditional art. I had some fun playing with my expanding copic collection. Thanks, my friends!

The first thing I drew was a head of the mermaid on the right, just to swirl Warm Grey No. 1 into her hair. It looks so nice and beigy.

But I got bored shortly, not knowing how to continue and went on to the following to play with bright colours, before heading back to the mermaid (as suggested by the bf on what the floating head should evolve into).

I messed up on the fins/tail of the mermaid without references but I had fun with the colours and the white gel pen, which I have abused to an extent. I’ve also messed her mouth out, trying to white out the original lines with the white gel pen. It didn’t work out very well, resulting in a smudgey, slightly tatched area. I photoshopped a new mouth over it as there was no way I could have salvaged that part.

So, 2 warm greys for the hair, 1 bright yellow for the starfish clip, 2 greens and 1 pale yellow for the tail – pretty good tone gradations. I think I might need to add a much lighter green to blend it in with her skintone around her arms.

And I suppose you’ve noticed that the mammaries are not particularly detailed. I don’t know and I don’t care. XD

Anyhow. I love my current collection of colours- they should be pretty versatile with whatever I’ll draw. Yay~
